
Dr. Tauhid Hossain Khan

Dr. Tauhid Khan received his Ph.D. in public health sciences from the University of Waterloo, one of Canada's top-ranked universities. His doctoral research yielded high-impact publications in leading international journals, shedding light on the connection between self-employment and health in today's uncertain employment landscape. Prior to this, Dr. Khan obtained a bachelor's degree with honors and a graduate degree in Sociology from the University of Dhaka. His outstanding academic performance (first class, first position in undergraduate degree) earned him the prestigious "Dean's Award" from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Dhaka. Furthering his academic journey, he completed his second MA, specializing in Child and Youth Studies, at Brock University, Canada, in 2018. Here, he received the "Faculty of Social Sciences Student Research Award" in recognition of his research accomplishments, standing out among his peers.
Throughout his career, Dr. Khan has received approximately 20 prestigious and highly competitive awards and scholarships, including the Governor's Gold Medal (2023, nominated), Syme Research Training Award in Work and Health (2022, IWH, Canada), President's Graduate Scholarship (PGS) (2022, UW), Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)-International (2022, 1 of 5 in UW), Mitacs Globalink Research Award (2019), Centre for Research in Work Disability Policy Graduate Award (2019, Canada), International Doctoral Student Award (IDSA) (2018-23, UW), Dean's Graduate Scholarship (DGS) (2017, Canada), and Dhaka Education Board Merit Scholarships for excellent results in Higher Secondary School Certificate (H.S.C) Examination (2004-2009, Bangladesh). In 2023, Dr. Khan received a prestigious fellowship, one of only ten awarded to early-career researchers worldwide, at the 23rd World Congress on Safety and Health at Work. This recognition grants him the opportunity to participate in the largest gathering of occupational health and safety scholars in Sydney in November 2023.
Dr. Khan is an associate professor in Sociology at Jagannath University, Bangladesh. In addition to teaching, he has been involved in numerous research projects funded by national and international agencies, often taking a leadership role. Dr. Khan's research output includes approximately 30 research articles published in reputable national and international journals, with nine of them as the lead author. His work has had a significant impact on the global academic community, with numerous scholars and researchers citing his research in their own publications, as reported by Google Scholar. This level of research influence is remarkable for an early-career researcher. Moreover, Dr. Khan has presented about 35 research papers at various scholarly and academic conferences, symposia, and scientific meetings held in Bangladesh, India, the USA, Canada, Sweden, Indonesia, and Australia, where he has often served as a lead presenter, session chair, invited speaker, and keynote speaker. He has been running sessions/workshops on research design, data analysis, writing & publication, higher education abroad, and pedagogy in university settings for university faculty members, young researchers, and graduate students, as an invited resource person/speaker.
He has also contributed to academia as an expert reviewer for several academic journals, including the American Journal of Sexuality Education (Taylor & Francis), Sex Education: Sexuality, Society, and Learning (Taylor & Francis), International Journal of Qualitative Methods (Sage), Women & Health (Taylor & Francis), Cogent Social Sciences, American Journal of Industrial Medicine (Wiley), and International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health (Springer). Dr. Khan co-edited a special issue of Sage’s journal, “NEW SOLUTION,” and is currently working as a section editor of a Springer book.
Dr. Khan actively participates in various scholarly communities, including the World Advancing Co-operative & Work-Integrated Education, Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CEWIL), Qualitative Research Journal Group (Institute of Work and Health), Canadian Association for Work and Labour Studies (CAWLS), and International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH). In 2019, he worked as a "visiting researcher" at the University of New England, Australia, and held research fellowships at prestigious think tanks such as the "Center for Research on Work Disability Policy" and the "Institute of Work and Health" in Canada. Currently, he serves as a fellow/advisor to the "Innovative and Coordinated Social Advancement (ICSA)" and the "Ethical Social Research Initiative" in Bangladesh. Dr. Khan provides consultancy services to various national and international organizations, including BBS, UGC, UN Women, and UNICEF.
Dr. Khan holds a teaching philosophy rooted in critical pedagogy, and his main research interests include the precarious labour market (gig, Gen-Z, vulnerable, and equity-deserving workers), occupational health and safety, health promotion, critical pedagogy, and work-integrated learning (WIL). His expertise lies in qualitative research, mixed methods, evaluation, systematic/scoping review, and policy analysis in terms of research design. Beyond academia, Dr. Khan possesses extensive experience in community and civic engagement, working as a psycho-social counsellor for boys, a career and higher education counsellor, and in knowledge translation and management roles. He was an active member of the central Indigenization committee at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He was also a founding member of the Research Ethics Board (REB)of Jagannath University.
