Promoting the Gig Labour Market Towards Achieving Zero Unemployment: A Sociological Study in Bangladesh

While the gig economy creates flexible income opportunities for youth, it also faces critical challenges related to inclusivity, job security, and income stability. This research seeks to explore the barriers within gig work and propose strategies to ensure its sustainability and inclusiveness, thereby contributing to broader socio-economic development. The project is funded by the Bangladesh Civil Service Administration Academy (BCSAA).

By unpacking the socio-economic challenges, institutional barriers, and coping mechanisms of self-employed individuals, the study seeks to debunk common assumptions and reveal the nuanced experiences of this crucial yet underexplored segment of the urban workforce. Employing a critical and context-sensitive approach, it highlights both the vulnerabilities and resilience of self-employed workers within Bangladesh’s rapidly transforming informal economy. Supported by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC), the research aims to generate evidence for policy dialogue and contribute to more inclusive labor and social protection frameworks.
